Our company was founded by James W. Rogers, back in 1962, in the San Fernando Valley CA, under the name Custom Paint & Chemical Co, Inc. It was his belief that we should create products for specific niche industries that would not compromise on quality and would relate to the premise that “you pay for what you get”. For the next 25 years he produced custom coatings for the furniture, decorative accessory, residential lighting and wall décor industries.
During the late 80’s when a recession was building up steam, the furniture industry faltered and we looked for an alternative marketplace for our products. We entered the fine artist materials industry with our water base acrylic artist colors in revolutionary “clear” containers so customers could see the quality of our products right through the packaging. This line of products was registered under the name Modern Masters artist acrylics in 1989 and is still sold today in retail art material stores across the US.
In 1996 Custom Paint & Chemical Co, Inc.’s assets were purchased by a new California Corporation, CPC Modern Masters Inc., headed by Mr. Rogers’ son, James W. Rogers II who carried on his father’s beliefs. A new direction was plotted for the company with the introduction of Metal Effects® into the Paint & Decorating Retail market. Soon after, the company launched several more products into this ripe market, such as the Metallic Paint Collection® and our popular Venetian Plaster.
In August of 2000, the company was sold to RPM Inc., a publicly traded holding company in Medina, Ohio.
