Since 1962
The Modern Masters story began in the early 1960s in California’s San Fernando Valley. Originally known as Custom Paint & Chemical, the company made coatings for furniture, decorative accessories, residential lighting and wall décor.
“You get what you pay for,” became the company’s mantra as producing the highest quality coatings was the primary mission.
Navigating a decline in the furniture industry, the company shifted focus, entered the fine artist materials market, and became Modern Masters Artist Acrylics in 1989. The acrylic paints were sold in clear containers offering consumers a close up look at the wide array of colors.
The company evolved further when the name was changed to CPC Modern Masters Inc. in 1996. Then, in August of 2000, it was sold to RPM Inc., a publicly traded holding company in Medina, Ohio. In 2017, Modern Masters joined the Rust-Oleum family of brands.
